What happens after the land is protected?

nyaltProtecting your land is something NYALT is proud to assist you with. It takes careful planning, attention to details, and thoughtful discussions with your family and NYALT to complete a farmland protection project.

When you conserve your land, you are leaving a legacy for future generations by allowing them the opportunity to have local farmland in their community.

While it is true that conserving your land takes a great deal of thought and time, NYALT must continue to dedicate considerable and ongoing resources after the project is completed.  As a land trust, we are expected by national conservation standards to be available to answer questions about your easement.

Monitoring: What it Involves.
Each year, we will monitor your property as outlined in your conservation agreement (conservation easement), to make sure any questions you have are answered, and that the terms of your easement are being upheld. When we conduct monitoring visits, we will call you first to arrange a time that works for you, as outlined in your conservation easement. When your protected land is sold or transferred to new farmland owners, we will meet with the new owners to explain your conservation easement and go over the related documents. This work is called “easement stewardship”.

farmInterestingly, the size of the protected property does not tend to increase our easement stewardship work very much. Instead, NYALT must plan for the number of landowners who will own the conserved farmland for generations to come.

How does NYALT cover the costs of Easement Stewardship?
NYALT relies on grants, donations, and contributions from individuals to build our Stewardship Fund for the conservation easements. This is a dedicated fund which is used to help off-set the staff time involved in undertaking easement stewardship activities.
